Too Fat for Fairytales?
"Too Fat for Fairytales?" was a personal project to create an artifact that successfully communicated the subject and content of my university dissertation. My dissertation was titled “Too Fat for Fairytales? The portrayal of fat bodies in Disney’s media” and it explored the negative ways in which Disney and Pop Culture alike criminalise fat bodies and idolise thinness.
I created my own jesmonite forms before spray painting them with colours that reflected the fake
'Disney Dream World'. I then transferred text from my dissertation that explored the negative effects of Disney's anti-fat bias onto the tray. Finally, I painted three nude figures onto the tray that explore a journey from being ashamed of your body, to learning loving yourself and reflecting Disneys and societies toxic beauty standards.
